IWBs: a fantastic teaching tool or non-interactive white elephant?with Pete Sharma and Gavin Dudeney

UPDATE: post-debate Yahoo group posts

The Learning Technologies special interest group of IATEFL, the international association of EFL teachers, ran a webinar on interactive whiteboards this afternoon. It took the form of a debate in which Pete Sharma presented the positive side of IWB use in language teaching, while Gavin Dudeney argued against this tool. Around seventy attendees listened and contributed to an ongoing chat, and some were able to take the floor and make an audio contribution afterwards. At the close of the hour, the host Nicky Hockly polled the audience: 28 said the IWB is “a fantastic teaching tool” against 25 “a non-interactive white elephant.”

Although both presenters presumably exaggerated their positions for the purposes of the debate, the arguments they raised seemed quite representative.
