CIRITTL Mission

The mission of the group is to build on, and extend, international collaborative research and REF 2021 Impact Case Study, in the use of interactive technologies in teaching and learning at all ages and contexts. Interactive technologies, and the wide array of technology that this encompasses, have many applications to teaching and learning across the education system.

However, research and evidence are often lacking. For example, 360° and Virtual Reality technology reports limited, but positive, outcomes that require further research (Sneed, Deringer and Hanley, 2021). Coupled with the additional challenge of emerging technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), the research group would aim to provide guidance and research to influence future policy and practice, both within the university and beyond.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of technology, and its’ role within teaching and learning, the group aims to develop capacity across the university with the outcome of developing a research and evidence base to benefit both Cardiff Met and Wales as a whole.

CIRITTL Aims

The group builds on, and incorporates, an established international research network with the Wales Collaborative for Learning Design (WCLD) [funded by Welsh Government for last three years], which includes a group of nine international experts, including: MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology], USA; University of California, USA; Hogeschool PXL, Belgium; University of Galway, RI; Durham University, UK. Barcelona University.

Key challenges include the rapid growth of interactive technologies and Bauman’s (2000: xi) assertion that ‘change is the only permanence, and uncertainty the only certainty’. We have already begun work in emerging technologies in education, notably Artificial Intelligence (AI), and this group will build on this work by drawing on strengths of different disciplinary lenses.

CIRITTL Leadership Group

The CIRITTL Leadership Group consists of Professor Gary Beauchamp (designated organiser / convenor of the centre), Dr Nick Young (affiliated research lead of the centre) and Dr Sammy Chapman (Research Assistant and contact for associated centre projects).

In addition, one representative of each school at the university will also sit within the CIRITTL Leadership Group.

The CIRITTL Leadership Group convene, where appropriate, every three weeks. These meetings focus on administrative tasks for the centre, as well as planning for future events and activities across the centre.

CIRITTL Meetings

Meetings for all those associated with the centre are held on the last Wednesday of every month. These meetings are open to anyone involved, or becoming involved with the research centre over time.

CIRITTL Meetings focus on the ongoing and future activity and scholarship of the research centre. This is largely dependent on any opportunities that arise, but will include bid writing, project planning, articles, dissemination and CIRITTL events and activities.
